Wake up, Germany!
That they are digging a grave for you,
that they have, with aristocratic riches,
plundered the country,
that town after town is falling apart ...
They want to start a civil war —
(the communists should do that!)
that the Nazi is making for you a funeral wreath —
Germany, don’t you see that — ?
That in the dark they brood,
that in the light they scream;
that every day
they conjure fascism ...
For justice they have nothing but laughter —
(the communists should do that!)
that the Nazi fights on the side of the exploiter —
Germany, don't you hear that — ?
That they stare fixated on war,
that they from place to place
drag their agents
at relentless pace …
The practice grenades are falling ...
(the communists should do that!)
that the Nazi is announcing your death sentence —
Germany, don't you sense that — ?
And from the depths of the factories a chorus
of millions of workers call out:
We know everything. They lock us up.
We know everything. They sneer at us.
We will be dispersed. And banned.
We count the victims; we count the dead.
No minister is stirred to action when Hitler speaks.
For those in the street. Against us stands the court of the Reich.
We see. We hear. We sense the forthcoming roar.
And when Germany sleeps —
We are awake!
